I agree that you need largish subjects for the best wide-angle macros and close-ups. Yes I'm aware that there is a limit on how close you can get with most wide angles and extension tubes, because there comes a point where the focal plane is within the front element.

It seems that manufacturers sometimes block the MFD according to their image quality standards, while lens construction would allow going a bit closer. In the MF lens era, some folks had a hobby of doing this to lenses. I recall there were rumours that the Samyang/Rokinon 8mm can be modded to allow closer focus than default, discovered by someone who got a lens which originally didn't focus to inf. Certain specialized setups use a small fisheye tip lens on top of an optical relay tube. Yes a lens with a small diameter is preferable for the sake of the light. Many nice WA macro samples are in fact rather close-ups of large bugs I suppose the Laowa has a comparatively decent working distance at 2:1. With some other WA lenses, one doesn't even reach 1:1 magnification by adding that much extension so that focus touches the glass.

The main limitation of the LX7 is that it could do with focus peaking, but it does have full manual control, and an aperture ring and multi-aspect sensor. You might still find one around new, although they are out of production now. It's very sharp in the centre of the lens, and shoots RAW. It will give frame filling roughly the same as 1:1 on FF at a 24mm eqv distance. The Panasonic Lumix LX7 I've got has got a very good macro function.

It's got a good native close focus and hopefully the pancake design will give a bit more working distance. I've ordered Canon 24mm f2.8 STM this year to try with my Canon system, including with a 12mm extension tube. I've still got one, but now unfortunately it's got a bit of fungus. I've not used this lens, but in the old 35mm film days I used to use the Sigma 24mm f2.8 compact macro focusing wide angle. There's the Nikkor 28mm f2.8 AIS, which has got good native close focus, a floating lens group for close focus correction, and the possibility of using short extension tubes. Even the shortest extension tube would create greater than 1:1 and the focus point is likely to be within the front element. To get the Rokinon 8mm to focus close you are going to need a custom extension of mm. The end of the lens tends to shade the subject, and it's tricky getting flash light in at this sort of angle. It's not just about scaring the subject, but lighting it. It's very tricky shooting with such a short working distance. However, at 1:1 the subject is less than 5mm from the front lens element.

I've been looking for the solution to wide-angle macro photography for some time. Rokinon 8mm fisheye modified to focus close maybe? Any good ideas? I have thought of the Laowa 15mm, but it's quite expensive for what it is.
